7 ways life is better with Grapefruit oil

Posted by Kim McCormack on

Great news!  While people who want to lose weight often include grapefruit in their diet, what if there’s no grapefruit on hand?  Grapefruit essential oil can also be used to assist weight loss, as well as offer many other health and well-being benefits, and if you keep a bottle in the cupboard then it’s always on hand.

A delicious smelling oil extracted from the peel of the Citrus x paradisi grapefruit plant, Grapefruit essential oil is one of my favourites for its many therapeutic uses, its ability to blend beautifully with so many other essential oils and best of all the way it makes my house smell!

Weight loss:

There are so many wonderful ways that Grapefruit essential oil can assist with weight loss.

It blends well with Patchouli essential oil to lower food cravings and battle hunger, making it a great weight loss tool.  Either inhale directly from the bottle or pop a few drops on your clothes (collar and cuffs) to keep those cravings at bay.  Adding Grapefruit oil to your home diffuser is a great way to gain control over your appetite.

A sluggish lymphatic system means the body may hold on to extra fluid.  By massaging Grapefruit essential oil into the skin (in a suitable carrier oil such as coconut, almond or jojoba oil) it can stimulate the lymphatic system, and have a diuretic effect removing excess fluid and toxins from the body, which in turn contributes to weight loss.  This is due to the amazing properties on Limonene which has been shown to improve metabolic enzyme levels, assisting in weight loss.

Lighten up.

Due to the positive effect that Grapefruit essential oil has on the lymphatic system by boosting lymph gland activity, it can play a key role in the body’s detoxification processes, removing cellulites and toxins and boosting immunity. When toxins build up in the body they form cellulite in the cells and can also increase fluid retention making you feel heavy and sluggish.  Make a body butter with a few drops of Grapefruit essential oil mixed with a tablespoon of coconut oil, and rub into your body before bed to help stimulate your detoxification processes.

Mood & Energy boost:

Grapefruit essential oil is another fantastic oil that has antidepressant properties.  It blends beautifully with other mood boosting oils (Lavender, Geranium, Frankincense) in a diffuser (such as the ultrasonic aromatherapy diffuser from Mood Infuser) to disperse delicious uplifting aromas around your home.  Grapefruit oil has an affinity for increasing positive feelings.

You can also inhale Grapefruit essential oil straight from the bottle or pop a few drops on your wrists or shirt collar to increase energy and boost mood during a busy day, or to get you through the 3pm energy lag!

Grapefruit essential oil is a fantastic acne fighter.

It has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that go to work fighting infection caused by blocked skin pores and removing excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells.  Appling Grapefruit oil directly to pimples can reduce inflammation and redness.  The oil also decreases the amount of sebum production in the skin meaning less chance of blockages, less chance of angry looking acne.

Healthy Hair & Scalp:

Strong and healthy.

Grapefruit essential oil contains tonic properties which not only tone various internal organs but also work effectively on toning hair follicles.  Add a few drops of Grapefruit essential oil to your shampoo bottle or even massage it straight into your scalp.  This will greatly reduce dandruff and increase the strength and health of your hair.

Liver love:

Overloaded liver?  Maybe you had a hard night out and your liver is feeling it.

Grapefruit essential oil is your go-to oil in this case!

It is a powerful liver and gallbladder stimulant, increasing detoxification and urination with its diuretic properties.

Massaging the oil into your skin (in a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil) will help stimulate the body to remove any toxin build up from a hard night out, flushing out excess water, sodium and fats.  Not only will this aid your liver, it will also support the kidneys and reduce the likelihood of urinary tract infections.  Inhaling the oil directly from the bottle will also help that hangover feeling disappear sooner.

Grapefruit essential oil is one of the best antibacterial oils.  It is often seen added to household cleaners and bathroom products.  Research shows that it is effective in combating bacterial strains such as E.Coli which makes it a wonderful oil to add to your kitchen surface cleaner.  Make your own kitchen cleaning spray by adding 10-15 drops of Grapefruit essential oil to a spray bottle half filled with white vinegar and half filled with water.  Not only will it leave your surfaces clean and healthy it will also eliminate nasty odours and leave your home smelling fresh.  Other citrus oils such as Lemon or Orange blend well with Grapefruit when making household cleaners.

Tisserand and Young’s book “Essential Oil Safety” does not indicate any specific precautions for the use of Grapefruit essential oil, and lists it as GRAS (generally recognised as safe).

I would, however, suggest avoid using any essential oils during the first trimester of pregnancy, as an extra precaution, especially if you are new to essential oils and their uses.

Grapefruit oil (as many of the citrus oils) has a slight risk of phototoxicity and therefore it is recommended to keep out of harsh sunlight if Grapefruit oil has been applied to exposed skin.

A patch test on the inner arm is recommended before use, and using the oil in a carrier oil can reduce the possibility of irritated skin in those with sensitive skin.
